Marks/Inscriptions: R. 187 Rich, William Gordon (1829-1912) was the 3 son of Rev. John Rich vicar of Ivnghoe, Bucks and was born 28, 29. He was educ. at Westminster of which he was head boy and he s stroked the Westminster boat in the annual race against Eton. He ent to Christ Church , Oxford in '48 and stroked the Oxford Boat and was president of the Oxford. Liv. Boating Soc. He won many races at Henley; one was a pair in which he owed with John Studholme He took his degree and deeded to 9o to to N.Z . he brought letters of introduction to Col. Wynyard , Acting. Gov. He spent some tines in Auck. and then went down to Whang are in a Maori canoe. Later he visited Wgtn. and Nelson . He worked on Duppa 's station at Nelson and was put in charge of the woodshed at shearing time. He joined Edwin Rich and W.H. Teschemaker in their drive of shep rone Nelson to the south He came on to Ch.Ch and took a in a 1 5 ton cutter to Dunedin and made his way on passage i to the Bluff and Colac Bay He was some of the time accompanied by a Maori sorties alone. In 67 back in N.Z. , he i ent into part. with David Maitland in the Ere burn Run , which they sold to the Mt Ida Coy. in 75 After an other trip to Eng he bought in 78 Toi Toi Station which he held till 1900 when it was subdivided and sold. He retired to live in Ch.Ch. He was a man of cultivated m ind and wide Know ledge . He was interested in British polities and in Athletics and was Well- informed on both subjects. marr.
