Marks/Inscriptions: R.1 Rhodes . 175 soho e, William Barnard (1807-78) was the eldest son of Wm. Rhodes of Epworth th, Lingo. , Plans House , The Levele and Baby Yo4s. went to sea at an early age and in 1826 was second officer of the Sam daney , in which he sailed to India and China . He made other voyages to the East and in 131 commanded the bry Harriett in which he had a third share . He made trading voyages to many parks of the world and in '36 he sold the brig and invested the proceeds in aod in Aust. which he stocked with sheep , cattle and horses . In the same year he took command of the bague Australian whaling which was filled ont b Cooper Holt and Roberts r a sailing voyage 2 years. These merchants of Sydney showed great trist in his ability of 2 for he had ho previous experience of whiling and the fitting out of a whaler was an expensive venture. He engaged in whaling round Ho in the Pacifier and round the coast of N.Z. He established trading stations round the coast on behalf o f his partners including one at Kapiti. He claimed to have bought from the Maoris a large area in Howes Bay but his claim was dis allowed by the commission He gave Capt. Lea hart £800 for his interest in Banks Pen. which was supposed to amount to £ 100000 ac. His trouble w ith the crew be came s0 bad that he had to call to gether a comm. of captains when he was lying at Anchor in Port Cooper and as a result the 3' mate and 17 of the crew were put on shore. Their 2 years crises had only yielded them £ 15. 1.6 so it was no wonder they were discontented. At one time when lying in Port Cooper he 6climbed the hills and looked across the Plains . He described them as a vast Swamp partly covered with water with too patches of bush His cattle were bought from Rust N.S.W . They were descended from cattle bought by Potter McQueen who s f them from Bowman. W.B. Rhodes gave up the sea and settled down to be a merchant at Wgtn from where he kept an eye on his various properties. In '41 at Te Aro he built the first substantial wharf. Marks/Inscriptions: R. 175 He owned a lst of property which is now part of the city of Wgtn. and had sheep running on ib. He built a large wooden house at Wales own which he called The Grange . He took over a herd of Alpe cas which the N.Z. Govt had imported from S. Amer ica and sent them down to Purau where they were a considerable uni sans . He helped to establish the N.Z. Shipp ing Co. the Bank of N.Z. and the N.Z. Insin ance Co. In 61 he and Capt. Daldry were touring the principal towns of N.Z. explaining the sch eme of the B.H. and encouraging people to subscribe. He wrote a letter to Robert Wilkin which appeared in the Lylt. Times 24.1.71 b giving his version of variou s historical events. such as the landing of his cattle. His version of the flagstaff incident was that he knew of the approaching visit of the French man o war and that he instructed Wm. Green to put up a flagstaff and hoist a hininian Jack when ever the French snip appeared He was a mem be of the Gen. Assembly 53-55 and 58-66. He was a member of the Wgtn Prov. Henry R.M. shot down in the Battle of Brittan in 1940 He d. 2.2.78 a sister of the first Mrs W.B.R. Cather mne youngest dau of John King of " 17.4.3 Wemy Wgtn marri Fred. Woes of 56' Reg. son of Lt.
