Marks/Inscriptions: R. 170 Rhodes , Izrael (1813 -71) came from Mer field , Yorks and arrived 4at Wellington in 42 with his wife. Ge or9e Rhodes engaged them to come and look after the Rhodes cattle and they came to Banks Pen. and settle d in Flea Bay . The Rhodes 's had used Flea Bay as a place to land stock. His wife was a delicate Woman and had lost her first 2 children . She had a third at Flea Bay and was terrified of the Maoris who were her only neighbours . She found however that they were kindly people and the life and climate aged with her and she reared a family of 8. She us ed to carry butter 8 miles over the hill to sell it in Akaroa oa. N.Z. Spectator 7.2.46 say s thabo the Schooner Sisters arrived Wgtn with 5t bake of wool en Flea Bay - the first wool to arrive fom this quarter (Streambed) Izrael Rhodes built a house in the Early 50's and the Rhodes Brothers finally sold him their grazing rights over 4000 ac. 4 bought his first eeoc sections 11.9.62. They were R.S. 4.609 +4610 ar outing to 50 ac . He got timber from Birdling who also sent him gun seeds .
