Marks/Inscriptions: O 95 Geo. Cram and intended to rebuild and re.-0gan ise it and in corporate a mercantile club with it. It has always been the best site for a hostel in Ch.Ch . and its present form as Clarendon Hotel in the 50's) it has usually been used by the Govern or when w siting Ch.Ch and was reser ied for the Queen on her visit to N.I Oram set to work to transfor it into a first class hotel. Alteration, and additions were carried out by Balcke and when they were unshed Oram gave Balclutha and his men a dinner in the He rechristened i t the Clarendon. He provided the supper fi a Grand Ball which was held in the Prov. Coun Chamber 16.1.67 when the Govern or, Sir Geo Grey visited Ch.Ch. for the first time in 15 years . He was one of the Original founders of the Canty. Brewing , Matting + Dis tilling Co. and was appointed a director at the first meeting , May 67. He was the first chair man. He was a steward at the Paparua Steeple Chase meeting . He was bankrupt in 67. Wynn Williams and W.H. haney were contesting the Papanui seat in Oct. 71 ; Geo Oram seceded Lane at nomination and made marry very hostile and personal remarks against - Wynn William s Oct. 7 Oram used to ride at the early paper chase hunts and broke a rib at one in July 72. Assoc. and his brothers in the trade prese ted him with a silver tea and coffee service . Ap. 73 . He stood for the Prov. Aoun. for the Papanui seat in Ap. 74 , Wynn Willi ams and J.T. Peacock bang Will ahead of him. They were both strong candid aer . His election slogan was that "he would open up Papanui He bought J.H. Hopkins New Brighton Hotel.- -. He Seems to have retired in 75 and was living at Ellerslie, New Brighton. When he was at the Carlton there was a toll gate there and Walsh and Henry White were toll gate Keepers. The toll gate was removed betwee sn J.A. in . and 5.30 A an . bey malicious persons , June 64 He was a member of the C.Y.C. for some years. marr.
