Marks/Inscriptions: O. 21 O'Connell , Major Edward Maurice 1854) belonged to the 99' Reg.t. and had been Brigade - Major to the O.C. Troo Wgtn . His father was Richard O'Connell . M.D. Deputy . Inspector - General of Hospitals. He came to Lylt. in the schooner Tw inS in Ap. '52 and soon afterwards went to the sale of Mt Grey Station which was held on the station 15.4.52 The sale was carved by the death of Capt Mitchell who had travelled overland from Wairau to Dashwood Canty. w ith Dashwood and had promised fo be a valuable Canty Settler. The ran of 20 000 ac. together with the iup r0emener secured by pre-emptive rialto over 250 ac. were sold for £400. The improvements included " two substantial houses, a dau , stock yard and milking shed and about 100 ac. in 3 paddocks fenced with posts and rails, and a small garden. The cattle were sold separately and brought the price up to - 2000 The Waimak. ferry was kept busy and so was the Bush Pub le House . Boys and Torlesse, the Surveyors put up many travelers . 60 or 70 were at the sale and 58 of them came by horseback. Longden and Le Cren the agents provided a bountiful hunch with beef and bread and butter. There was a keg of brandy in a room but there were no disturbances. no bedding was provided.
