Marks/Inscriptions: O. 11 O'Brien, Daniel (1847-1916) was born at Melbourne and was brought up on a farm but took to racing. He came to N.Z. in 67 . He rode for C.B. Fisher when a lad. He trained horses in Otago for the gold fields meetings. He and Harri Pr ince went to Otago with Kildare ary but they were Stony broke before they got there . He rode to a sports meeting 23 miles away, won A. handle race and a flat race (running and was third in a hack race. in which he was placed first after the other two were put out for jostling . This put them in funds again He returned to Ch.Ch and. bought Tambourine with which he won many good races Then he became licensee of the Em pie Hotel at Oamaru . He returned to Ch.Ch and bought the Racecourse Hotel He won the first N.Z.Cut with Tasman in ' . He raced and trained at Riccarton W ith the Racecourse Hotel as his headquarters He acted as whip in paper chase hunts at Ch.Ch. E.W. Millet was hunts man. He won 31 races with Tasman . He boug ht Trenton from G.G. Stead and sold him well in Aust. He bought carbine as a yearling for 640 gus a high price for the tane and sold him to Donald Wallace for 3000 gus . Carbine was sold to the Duke of Portland for 13000 g.3 N.Z.
