Marks/Inscriptions: N 149 Northcote Francis Stafford (1859. -1935) was born 17.3.59 at the Rectory , Monk Ok hampton. Devon sh. a son of the Rev. Henry Mow bray Northcote , Rector of the parish. He was educ . at Guild ford Grammar Sch. Surrey and at All Hallows G ram iner Sch., Houston , Devon. In '8 2 he and his younger fro. J.A. came out to N.Z. and went into part. with Henry Wharton in High field Station. Waiau. Wharton died and the Govt took over most of the land in 1903 The Northcote retained the house farm of 500 cres including the famous wools hed which is still in good order . They bought the Whales Back Ren on the inland road to Kaikoura - a bad run for Snow. Frank was a starch supporter of the C. of E. and a lay reader . He was a. member o f the Armi C.C. and of the Ari A.+ P. Assoc. of which er of ( he was a life member. The Show for years was held in the woodshed paddock and oa the Woodshed came in handy for showing flowers, cooker, class 5 ate. Where the Got. took High field for closer settlement, the North coles agreed to ksep the higher hill country which was thought unsuitable for close settlement at £2.10.per ac. The Govt. gave them an avera ge of £2-18 o for all the land they bought. '90 - - bad tines - - the owners had to go to £475 rental to keep it sounds a very high rental. E High ild got top price for ewes at Culverden Gue Fair Mar. 92. He was unmarried d. at High field June 1935 ag 76.
