Marks/Inscriptions: N 105 Nickels , William (1851 -1920) was a son of Philip Nicholls of St. Aust ells Cornwall and came out with his father in the Wa spite and landed at Auck. in '63. Four years later he and his father removed to Canty and William served his apprenticeship to the Wool scouring bessie ess under Major Horn brook at Heathcote and stayed with him 10 years altogether. Then he and J. Mc Neigh Watt started in business at t self st 7 (to which they may have given the Lame) under the stile of the N.Z. Provision and Produce Co ; they was both able men and they made a success where various others had failed . Their business was to boil down sheep, fellmonger the Wool, tin any meat goo d enough and make the rest into soap, manure. Nicholls looked aft the fell angering st side. When Watt died Nicholls took over the wool scouring side of the business under the name of the apart one Works . when the C.F.M1. built their wor ks close by he supervised the fell mongering side for them. Wm Nichols and A.E. Nicholls ? des part. 1.11.84 , Wm. carried on. He had a fine farm at Belfast which in the end amounted to 4 00 ac. He had a Clydesdale staid there ; he held a dispersal sale May 18. - prices poor . He planted the apple trees just south o Johns farm. th of ) He gave 8 ac on the Main North Rd for a p ark and later increased fam. inf.
