Marks/Inscriptions: N. 79 probably son of Wm. Mears Newton of Greek hither, Kent. Newton, Alfred Coom bs (1835-1915) was born in London, and was educ. at Kings Coll. School , London . He parents lived at Green ith. Alfred + Her bert Newton arrived by Balaklava , cabin 29.2.64 He had attended Lon don Mw. He sat for the first schoolmaster exam. Feb. 74. f held by the North Canty. Bd. of Edie . and came out easily top which ' 8 entitled him. to take charge of a school of 50 children. Ha was appointed to Heathcote School. Apparently before this he went into part with Wm. Hurry Barnes who had a well known foundry in Manchester St. ur yt apparently had some engin eig or saint,fie qualifications newton and Baines prepared a plan + estimate of £.10 or a fire alarm tower with a gong for Ch.Ch. Fire Bde. The tower was built and a large gon f hing from the top. Apparently because the gong was hing from the middle instead of the edge , the result was disappointing. ang. Coun. said the contractors had fared in their undertaking and refused to pay. R. Finally the Coun. decided to pay the contractors 5 and the Fire Bde I as long as a bell was substituted for lhe gong. Hill . schoolteacher was the other but Hill was Absent and So Newton was actually the first man to receive his degree e1solheim He was given a presentation when the left Heathcote Sch. He was an active member ( e of Timity Cong. Church. When the Church was in its early years , Newton used to go out to Tai Taper to hold services and Janis Ford used to take hua out in his 919 and help with the services ; He was a deacon T.C.C.
