Marks/Inscriptions: N. 76 Newnham, William Thomas (1839-70) was born at Cardiff, Wales and was educ. at the Blue coat School , London . He came out to N.Z. in the Sir Edward Paget arriving 2.7.56 and for 6 years was clerk to Peacock + Co , Ch.Ch. He then moved to Kaiapoi and he and Wm. Dixon Buddle bought in July 65 the Beehive Store from J.S. (Bully) Whith He and Buddle took over D. Macpherson 's store house at Kaiapoi Nov 66. They got the contract for supplying the uniforms for the Woodend Co of the Canty Rifle Vol. He and Buddle were bankrupt in '67. He was sec. to the Lylt. Wes. Church School in '63 and called tenders for a new school Mar. 63 . When the Kaiapoi Rowing Club was formed in '66 he was elected to the Comm. He was elected a director of the Kaiapoi Land, Beldy + Invest. Co Sept 67 in spite of being bankrupt at the time 1) When a vacancy occurred in ot. Kaiapoi B0r. Coun owing to the resignation of J.Hebden , He win am and E. Parnham contested the seat and there was a lot of interested and a heavy poll. Newnham got 79 votes to Par hams 54. He was the principal shower of pigs at the Ch.Ch. Sh os of 68 and won 2 first prizes . He presided oven a meeting of the Woodend Wes. Chapel Dec. 68 + over 100 were present. It was the 4"arnie sar y . She went to Lylt after his c death and finally settled in dt Belie fai Ox ford where she lived 25 years . She d. 5.7.17 ag 77. She had come out in the Bangal ore in '51 , + had been confirmed by Bishop Selwyn He d. during his mayoralty after a painful th ess 16.7.70 aged 31 He was given a public funeral , reps. of the Kaiapoi Fre Bde , Borough Coun. and Ch.Ch.
