Marks/Inscriptions: N. 45 Neilson, William Francis (1850 -80) was born 24.9.50 and was one of the best cricket ers who ever played for Canty. He first appeared in the news as playing for Canty. v. Otago in 175- - the only inter- provincial matlin in those days . He was described as a good bat, good Change bowler, good field. He played again in '76. He was elected a member of the C.J.C. in May 76. He had a pretty goo d jumpe r called Co ghet which he started at the first Grand National meeting to be held at Ricc. May 76 . He played again i the Canty. V . Otago match in ' 7 and made top seve in the ? Inning s and took 5 wicket gh R9. He was a steward of the South Canty Jockey Club Races Ap. 7 and of the G jana National Steeple chase run in Capt. Caries paddocks at Timaru. He played for Timaru X1 V. Ch. Cl , Nov. 77. He had some interest in South Canty. and was frequently Timaru. He organised a fairlie y strong amateu Touring tam to go to Auck Dec. 77.; this was quite unofficial . His team beat Auck. Easily He judged at the Ch.Ch. Dov y Show Ap . At the Grand National St. pleclmeai meeting held at May 78 , he Won the Hunt Cup with Te Whetu mara ina and was second in the G.raid National with Moose. He bought Henry Redwoods good 34r old hatator shortly before the Derby and won it very easily w ith him. Marks/Inscriptions: N45 was sired by Traducer . Nov. 78. Neilson raced 4 horses at this meeting. He took an active pet in the S. Canty A. A. Club meeting May 79 acting as judge and timekeeper and won the officials race. He, Dan O'Brien and Hon Wm. Robinson were racing in part. in this year. He had a cottage either or or near the Rib. Race course . He no doubt. watched his horses work and perhaps rode then in work He excelled at cricket and was a very good captain . He was also perhaps the best amateu b hard player in N.Z. although probably Charles Enys wonld rine him close . He was also a first class shot and a good Tennis player could hardly be lawn tennis which was not played as early as '80) . He was a member of the Ch.C. Club. He was apparently so ill when he was staying at the Club that he had to have a nurse. The Com m. discussed how much to charge r her board +lodge. a case Saunders v. Dela main July '80 shows that he was insolvent of the time of his death.
