Marks/Inscriptions: M 39 Neighbours , William . (1838-1915 ) was bor n in Middx Eng and received a thorough taming in the cart of brick making and pottery . He arrived at Sydney in '55 and went to the Ballant gold fields . He arrived in Ch.Ch. in 58 and started a brick and pottery - business at Hillsbor rugh and Waltham an d lived on the Ferry Rd. He had two partners Thom as Aldwin and Jesse Has thorpe. The latter with drew in Sept. 61; the other two carried on. He married in 66 and in 6y took a trip to Eng , sailing by the Hun loya 15.4.67 " cabin. He was elected member of the Opara sch. comm. He left f or Eng ag ain in '72 in order to breyer the latest brick - and tile making machinery . May 73 and returned bringing with him what he wan ted. He also imported a machine for making glared s ck ted Earthen wore pipes and was able to under sell the imported article. Oct 73 E.J.Wakefield described a tip up to the coal mines and brick k hs and told how Neighbours slipped off his coat and made a barrow of bricks (22). Dec. He bought 21 ac from Geo Dunn can of Heathcote 13.3.83 (se Duncan) . He sol d out in '86 and established the Waimanga oa Brick s Works at Nelson in 93 after being 2years at Greymouth. His firm became Wm. neighbours O Ions. e was popular wherever he went. He was ar en thus ras tie bowler and was a member of the Canty + Westport Bowling Clubs.
