Marks/Inscriptions: N 30 I. Nedwill D. Courteney (1837-1920) was born 14.8.37 the 2' son of John Nedwill of Balley oran , Co. Derry and entered Queens Col. Belfast. He was senior scholar in '59. He was destined for me deemed and was asst. to Sir Wm. Mc Carmai at Belfast, Gen. H0sp. He was Malcolm Exhibition er ) there and then joined the Army Medcalf School at Chatham and was 4t on the list. He was M.t + M.R.C. S. (Eng.). He came out as surgeon supt. Jan 67 63 on the Chariot of Farre after being invalid ed out of Chat ham with pleuro. pneumonia. He decided to stay in N.Z. and started first at Rangi ora. o one of his early cases there was at St. Helens Station , Waiau when he had ) swim his horse over the Waian River in heavy flood. He moved to Ch.Ch. in '64 and advertised that he could be consulted ' at the chemists shop of J.C. Brooke; his home was Harr ing ton Cottage 3 Montreal St. He was gazetted surg. to the Gentry Rifle Vol. in 64. He e made top score in a rifle match Soon afterwards . He was elected a member p f the Ch.Ch Club in '66 , and of the Philosophical Inst. in '69. He was appointed inspector to the Bd. of Health in '80 and probably he pertained his greatest Work for Ch.Ch. during his period as in spector. He launched a cam pain for Clean ing up. the dram age fever Spots of Ch.Ch. He was surgeon to the Ch. Ch. Host. for mary years and resigned in 1906 when he was appointed consulting Surgeon.
