Marks/Inscriptions: M. 378 a Miles, Gr Os ben or (1822-6s) came out in the John Taylor in ' and one of his children died on the voyage. He had married Adelaide , a dau of Henry Phillips in Eng in the 40's. He and Geo Gould went into part. 1.7.54 ; their business premises were in Colombo St. West Side between Glos St and Armagh St . They announced dis. of part.: in Jan 60 but they seemed , Moved to be working to gether in various weary for some years later. Geo Gould o to the corner of Glos. and Colombo Sts and then to a new building opp. to Gould and miles origin al store. th ro senor miles stayed in the original building , East side , for some time. He was very act ve in the formation of the Mechanic s fest. The organises hoped to buy a site next to Cried lands (present Canty Libre, sith) and they had to arse £262 . Miles, W.D. Wood, and. E. Rece guaranteed the purchase, They bought it and the Prov. Govt. granted them £250 as compensation for a former site which the P.G. had, appropriated. The P.G. also granted £250 towards the building find. S.C. Farr was the architect for the building and Balcke and Broward the builders . The price was £ 1169. For 6 years Miles gave a room in his officer for the use of the Lylt. Ja cots referred to him in '65 as our excellent and in de ati able treasurer. When the hirsi cal hinson was formed in Nov. 61 he was app ed Treas. The building of a concert hall was part of the Scheme and 1500 had to be raised. He was also app ed Treas. of the Canty Horticultural Soc. in Dec. 61 .In the election for the first Min. Coun. of Ch.Ch. in Feb. 62 he was third on the poll ( 20 candidates stood for 10 seat) . His work for the Mechanis ? had made him popular : In May 62 he was made Treas. of the Brit. + For. Bible Soc. He and Gould were both religious mer. He was Treas. of the Ch.Ch , Gas Co. which was formed in Nov. 6 and was later, a director He was an original director of the Provincial Investment Soc. He was on the comm. of the Fin Arts Soc. founded in '63. He had a 4 14 ac section bet vern Colombo and march ster Lot 19. Town Reserve with a large house and buildings . It was offered for sale by Charles Crake in May 68 , 21k years after his death.
