Marks/Inscriptions: M. 686. Mount fort, Benjamin Woolfield ( was a son of Thomas Mount fort of Birmingham. He was trained as an architect and was articled to Richard Carpenter and had further training under Gilbert Scott. He and his wife Emily and his sister Susanna, - came out in the Charlotte Jane in 1851 ; af so his brother Charles Wheeler and his wife. The Mount forts were one of the first fom families to make their way over the hill and settle in Ch.Ch. His first major comm iss1on in Canty was Holy Trinity Church Lylt. It was long and very high and was designed to be built on the brick and timber principle (brick noggin) ) make economies the parish cut down the length and left the height as it was . This made it look rather rider lous and, as it turned ont, unsafe. The timber, lack pini from Wgtn , shrank and the bricks got loo se and a finger could be pus hed in to the cracks. Twice bricks fell into the church and the congregati n foll refused to use the church any more. Thee architects sported on the building and the means of making it safer. The foundat ton stone had been laid 24.4.5 2 by God ley who made a memor able spec and the church was opened 6.1.53. His part. with Luck was diss. in July 64 and he immediately went in to part. with Maxwell Bury.. other accounts say that Bury des ig ned St. Johns Lat Sq. Bury + Mount fort divided the prize for the Mussen w ith Speechly; they were responsible for St. James's - the - Cust. When it was decided to start on the building of the Cathedral a commission sat to dis ens what Canty architect was to supervise the carrying out of Scott plans.
