Marks/Inscriptions: M. 93 Manson, Samuel (1815- 90) was born and Educated at Caper on, Ar4rh ire and was trained as a carpenter. He with his wife and family came out to N.Z. in the Thomas Harrison jin 42, His brother D. David Manson died on the voyage John Deans also travelled out on the ship. They landed at Nilson. John Deans being dissatisfied with his land at Nels on decided to join his brother Wm. in settling on theo Canty plains and he engaged Manson to rome with him. The Manson family and the Gebbies sailed down in the sch oner Richmond with Wm Deans , leaving Port Nichols on 11.2.43 . Marson was one of the party that made their wary to the Riccarton Bush and built there the first 3 simple house divided into 3compartments by blankets. It was built without nails these having been left boh nd. In 145 their engagement with the Deans brothers being completed, the Gebbies and the Masons decided to settle at the head of Lylt. Harbour. They each arranged to lease a " bowen - of cows from the Deans's , the terms being s0t- a row a year and all calves to be reared for the Deans's Masons leased land from the Maoris running the harbour from Teddington towards Port Cooper. He called his farm Rains hill. Port Coo per cheese had a good name in Wgtn + Sydney .
