Marks/Inscriptions: born in Montgomery shir H. 868 Humphreys , Edward Wingfield (1841 -92) was the second son of Erskine Humphreys , barrister of Garth reg h , Wales. In a speck he said he had arrived in Ch.Ch. in 54 and had held property in Ch. Ch ever since. He must have been Wrongly reported. Scholefield said he was in Otago in 64 and top up property in St rath Taieri. He was in Ch. Ch. in '67 and presented a cup for a W.f.O. race in the Jan. 67 Macs. He was elected a member of the Ch Ch. Cliburn in 64. In 67 he advertised in the paper that all clams against him should be address to the Ch.Ch. Club. He was apparently leaving N.Z. shortly He sailed for Eng. by the Mataura in May 67 va Panama and he returned on the same ship. Miss Hawdon was also a passenge on the ship and he married her in '69. He was trust for Geo. Macfarlan the lawyer and member of Part who d. Oct. 68. He was going to stand for the vacant seat but when . Peacock also announced himself a candidate he withdrew. He was living in Ch.Ch in '89 and stood for the vacant Ch.Ch. North seat (Vogel had res ig9ned); and he defeated John Ollivier by 403 voles to 378 . Marks/Inscriptions: H. 868 When C.M. Gray on becoming Mayor Vacated his seat in the Ch.Ch.C.C. Humphreys was returned unopposed. He left for Eng. to undergo an operation for cancer and was given a farewell 1.9.91. He and his wife were very popular. She gave a farewel fancy dress ball when they left. When thy left Otago to live in Canty she made a gift of £5000 to ther Dunedin Hosp Fes ting Jones in his Life Samuel Butler said that Hinn preys lent Butler a large sum of money without security when he was badly in need of it. This was probably when an expected remittance from Butlers father oed not arrive. Butler took erp and stocked a good deal of county in 9 short time to male up Mesopotamia Station. marr. 21.4.69 at St. Johns Lat. Sq. Alice 2' dau of Joseph Hawdon.
