Marks/Inscriptions: H. 366 1906? " Hayhurst, John Turnbull Murray (1860- 1906) was born at sea 16.11.60. He lived at G reen Hayes, Temuka, returned to Eng in 67 and remained there for 2 years , went back again in ' 75 and completed his seor Educ. at Ley s School, amb. He came bach to N.Z. in 78 and started to farm on a farm he named Ley s Farm. - kron locally as "the in odd farm". He was elected to the Temuka Rd. Bd. in 82. He was also a member of the Geraldine C.C. and the South Canty. H osp. Bd. He was a keen volunteer and joined the C. .C. in -79. In 84 he ou mande the Temuka Rifles. He managed to get a dill shed built in Temuka . In 1 2 his father handed over the i an age ment of Green Hayes to him. He organised the flows mill started by his father and put in new machinery. He went to the S.A. war as a capt. in the 3 "Contingent and returned sick and when he e0overd became Major in command of the 15 Batt. South Canty Mounted Rifles. He was the first chair man of the combined Temuka and Arowhenua Town Bdo in 99. When it became a borough he was elected the first may or defeating J.Blyth. He was motorman g into Timaru to see two of his Jonson off to the War : a doy caused his car to swerve.
