Marks/Inscriptions: H. 358 " Hayes, John (1832-1907) was a Crimean veteran who had received 2 wounds on the leg at Sebastopol. He was first in the 55' Reg. and later in the 39: Foot. He got his discharge in '64. He got the Crimean medal with Sebastopol clasp but lost it in a foe fire at Halifax. Nova Scotia. When on a parade at the Duke of y ' visit, the Duke noticed he had no medal and asked him why. When he heard the story he promised to have a new one sent out. It had not arrived at the time of his death. Sergt. May Clayton looked after him. He was gwen a military funeral He d. 29.11.07 ag. 75. ? Margaret widow of John Hayes d. North.
