Marks/Inscriptions: H. 190 Harper, John. ( 1826-196 was born in Norfolk. He and his wife Elizabeth 22 8 and their dau son Ely ah came out in the Randolph in 1850. They settled in the Heathcote Valley aged remained there for the rest of their lives. He saw the timel works proceeding. He had a line of buses for 8 years till the completion of the tunnel put an end to that sort of bru suss. His father had been a tenant o f Squire Tuck in Norfolk and he came ont to manage Dl Earle s farm on the Heathcote; Earle had been Squire Tucks doctor. The Harpers first lived in a hole in the bank of the river , then in a wattle and daub hut. Later he leased Dr Wills farm . When he started his coaches e had a brick stable near the Heathcote Wharf for his 8 horses . He only charged 60 fam any one part of the Ferry Rood to anny other part. Later he extended his service to Sumner , When the trams started he gave up his coaches and worked on farms round about. He built a neat little cottage on 12 ac. near his stables and went in for fruit and Jowls. He had a family of 9. His second son Randolph G. was born on the Randolph 16.11.1850. At an eades early colonists reunion held at Wainoni they had a family ruin ; their descendants amounted to 170 . the old couple were present and were then aged 83.+82 pass. list. Canty Mus. Randolph Geo b. on Randolph 16.11.50 lived on the Ferry Road near Lancaster Park . He worked in the Woolston Tanner and then in a brick works. His son Randolph Benjamin - see P. cutting.
