Marks/Inscriptions: H. 183 Harper, Charles John (1838- 1920) was the third son of Bishop Harper and was born at Eton and was educ. at Rossall and at Ciencester ag.ic. Coll. He came out to N.Z. with Bishop Selwyn before his father , in the Danke of Portland and was employed at St. Johns Coll. Auck. till he came to Canty. in ' G.A.E. Ros had bought Waireka station from the Macdonald Bros in '54 and he took Harper in to part. and left him to manage the station ieds share of Henry Tancred Bishop Harper arrived by the Egmont Dec. 56 and bought. Malvern Hills an some time later and Charles Harper i an ged it, but was succeeded by his brother George, Charles Harper and Ross leased Four Rake but the great sow of 67 ruined them and Ross never recovered. They were also partners in Lathe Coleridge which Dr Barker sold to them. Harper carried in with Lake Coleridge and sold it to H.M. Cotton in Mar. 71 Harper had also owned Avoca and his brother George managed it for hum. He sold it to Reginald Foster and the Rev. Lorenzo Moore in '64. He was not fort mate in the variou s stations he leased or owned but he did better in farming. He bought Blacken field in '71 and farmed if for 10 years . Marks/Inscriptions: H. 183 C.J.Harper Se J.E. Wilson , who ladd the executive , wished to appoint Chas. Harper. This was just at the time when Prov. Gots. were being abolished and Prov. executives , were waiting for the next step. Rolleston refused to accept Harper because of his lack of experience - and he certainly had none. and instead appointed Wm. James on the tops civil servant on the Treasury sidle. The correspondence was published , May 76. In '81 he bought part of Westerfield and built his homestead of on the north bank of the Hinds , 4 miles below Mayfield. He bought s ome land below across the river from Ch cot and leased a large tract of tussock country on the Rangitata Plains which he grazed , In 95 he cut up and sold his freehold. He kept a block on the Mayfield ad Westerfield Rd and about 200 ac. built or it. His eldest son Henry J.C. Harper tor k over this farm . In 97 he bought the block on the Rang tata Plains that he had been leasing and after wards sold it. In 1903 he bought part of Maraniss which was called Hackthorne and his younger son Godfrey took this . Charles Harper then retired to Ashburton. He had been a member of the old Rakaia Rd. Marks/Inscriptions: H. 183 From 99-1917 he was a member and part ofthe tones chairman of the Ashburton C.C. This was a strong Council (including John Grigg + E.G. Wright) card he was a strong and able chairman. He paid great attention to tre planting and water races. He was first elected to the Ash. C.C. Nov. '84. He started an Ashburton Co. mig tion farm at Elgin. He was for a time chair man of the Rangitata Rd. Bd. and in '66 was commissioner for the Rakaia dist. (which meant that the Rd. Bd. was defunct and he assumed its powers. marr. 3.7.61 by Bishop Harper Cecilia Ann 2' dau. Rev.
