Marks/Inscriptions: H. 174 Harley , Edward Steame (1839-1901) was the eldest son of Joseph F. Harley of Leicester whis was an accountant there, and was educated in Leicester. When he was 18 he arrived in Melbourne where he joined Miles + Co. He arrived in Ch.Ch in 64 and looked after the accounts of Robt. Heaton Rhodes of and of Rhodes Bros. This was probably while he was in Miles + W.'s office. He was a good crick ter , particularly a bowler and played for Canty. V. Otago. Feb. 69. He made 2 ducks and took s wicket s for 48. He had also played v. Otago in 65. When the Ch.Ch and the Canty Cricket Clubs arakura a mated as the "united " Harley was one of the comm. then the hew parish of St. Marks , Op arias was formed he was elected a vestryman . Oct 75. He was the prine m over in forming the Ch.Ch. Cricket Club in Sept.70. He was one of the comm. ed Cox was president. He was elected to the : Alfred Co vestry of St. Johns , Heathcote and was Vicars churchwarden Ap. 73-74. He was manager of Maling + Cs for some years. In Sept. 81 when he left Maling s to join the Loan + Merc. he was given ia farewell presentation seeding John le He was in charge of all stock for the L. + Merc. and was later manager a tiring in Mar. 95. Cyclop NZ11 says he and John Cooke took the initial steps which resulted in the formation of the C. F.M. This os quite in tie but Harley was present f. Cyclop.N.Z 1i : LT. 18.3.67 : Hist. For years he was choirmaster of the p Op awa Church and was presented with some plate at a cumine at Rising holme commemorate his services He went for a health trip to Eng in Mar. 95 and E.G. Staveley then succeeded him as manager of the Loan Co. He was an original director of Ward + Co. He was a member of the Comm. of the Canty A +P. Assoc. Mar. 83 He was chairman of the Chamber of Comm. in '95. G.E. Wareing said he had a fine voice and was a member o of the Ch.Ch . Chase held his shares till 1915 then sold them to Mrs M.E. Burke . In 1918 Burke sold his shares to Joseph Bryan, a Rattray + Mis Led Rattray. Harley old his shares in1925 to A. Rattray.
