Marks/Inscriptions: H. 170 Harkess John ( ) was the first head master of Waitaki High School which did not make much progress in his time . When he he resigned ova moved to Ch Ch and bought a house at Riccarton which he called kent Lodge . This had been originally built by Wm Turton a farmer of Rec. who called it Bare wood. John Tucker Ford bought the place and Altered the name to Ringwood . Kent Lodge was a boarding school and Jan form '97 till about 1900 . It was then sold to Frederick Cross. wine + spirit merchant. It was burnt down in . Harkess was a big Kindly man and a great stickler for the classics. P.
