Marks/Inscriptions: H. 158 Hardy - Johnston . Thomas Masterton (1816 -94) was the youngest son of Capt. E. Johnston, R.N. and was educ. at Chelsea . He was appo to the staff of the Ordinance Trig ono meticul survey of Eng. and afterwards served under John Barrow C.E. of Chester and worked mostly in North Wales. Later he worked under Joseph hocke M.P. R.R.S in Parliam en ary sur berks. From '47 - he was under J.K. Brunel . F.R.S. and was engaged in South Devon and Cornwall railway surveys and helped in the G.W. Railway Docks at Plymouth . He surveyed the site of the Royal Albert Bridge Over the Tamar. In '50 he was in Guerin8ey designing improvements in the tidal harbour . In '56 he was nominated for a captain cy in the Turkish contingent serving in the Cr ura and then became engineer to the Madras Rly. Coy. He remained in Inaha till '72. He was at one time acting - chief engineer to the Indian Govt. . He undertook many important works in Travancore . He returned to Eng. on account of his health and came out to N.Z. in '73 landing in Auck and came an to Canty. about '76. He was appointed engineer to the Lakes Forsyth c oiled Ellesmere re d Akaroa Railway Trist. This was a scheme toa line from Little River to Akaroa - came to nothing. Feb. 78. He was sto only in favour of the projected Milford Lagoon Har bour and pooh hov ed Sir John Conde 's report against t. The Milford Lagoon Har bar was part of the Oxford Temuka Railway Scheme which got as far as sheffield. Piles were driven for a Waihi Rly bridge. He became M.R.C.E. '60. He was an invalid in Ch .Ch. fo r the last 2 years of his life. He d. at 103 Hereford St. 2 4.9.94 ag 78. His wife Emma Mary Olivia d. 27.12.28. . daus. 3 sons. eldest dau.
