Marks/Inscriptions: H. 153 Harding . Capt. Thomas 1873) arrived by the Royal Stuart 4.1.55. J.B. Acland who was also a passenger. says in his diary of the voyage "Capt. Harding and his wife - - now coming out as a settler" evidently in plying that he had been out before in command of a ship. In '56 the Moorhouse brothers were starting Shepherds Bush and Capt. Harding lived with them first as a cadet and later perhaps as an overseer. Herding and Moorhouse were in part. and they diss. part. Mar. '56. Acland says Harding bought from John Hall for £ 350 Runs 15 and 42 and probably bought from C. Wright earlier Run 56 and probably Run 329. in Dec. 59. These together made up the rin he called Scar ness. He had 2000 shep sheep there early in 58. 3.W , Teschemake rater mentions in his journal 27.11.58 starting of from Ch.Ch. in comparing with Walter Runaway . Harding + J. Beswick. They crossed the Rakaia cept Beswick who funk ed it. In 63 Harding had 400 shep there as well as cattle. In 64 oc 65 Harding sold the run to H. J. cridland of Hoo Hay. Harding took up Rum 249 part of Lower Lake Heron but sold i t amistad midi tedy to A. Olliver . He took up Run 828 part of Upper Lake Heron in '60 . Marks/Inscriptions: F. 153 Cup. T. Handing. 2 had sold it all to F. Polhill by '65. Cridland pard £ 13900 for Scares. After he left Scares he lived at Governors Bay. He had known Pand Nixon Hodgson of Gov. Bay before Ether of them left for N.Z. He entered into an agreement with Hodgson that Hodg son w old hold a 50 ac. section in trist for Harding 's son James , apply the rents and profits for the benefit of James until James came of age on 12.9.67 when he was to hand it over. Hedg son took uh R.S. 232 in Gov Bay in accordance with this agreement and selected his 250 pre-emptive close at hand. Hodg son did not carry out the terns of the agreement but offered to bing James Herding interest for £400 when James came of age. James knew nothing about the agreement untel Capt Harding who had left for Eng. some time in the 60's , returned to N.Z. in 73. James Handing applied to the Court for au order requiring Hodgson to carry out the agreement in his favour and the court made the order. James Harding had come out with Hodgson and Hodgson 's mother in the Labuan in Capt. Harding returned to N.Z. in the Langstone in '73 and come of his family came out in the White hall . Capt. Marks/Inscriptions: H. 153 Capt. T. Harding. was not a Temperate man and sometimes used morphi and that he wes in difficulties and sometimes lived with friends (difficulties not specified). He had been at the Mitre on the last even ing he had been seen alive and had intended to skep on the baguette John Knox where he was known and in which he had lately taken a short trip to Aust. He had had apple tic fits. He left a letter including the phrase "should Any thing occur to me " which could be taken as showing an intention to take his life. He lived with his son James during his time in N.Z. in '73. Verdict of inquest. o Found drowned " d. about .11.73. wife- Sarah Metcalfe. sons William James educ.
