Marks/Inscriptions: H. 109 Hampton, James (1849-1931) was a son of John and Mary Ann Hampton of Balley tie, Kilmore, Co. Armagh , Ireland and was brought up as a farmer He came out to N.Z. in the Charlotte Gladstone which arrived 30.1.71 and started farming al Southbridge . He moved to Ashburton in 74 and worked at contract cropping and having got enough money together bought a farm at Tin wal d. After he had farmed it for 12 years, he sold it to John Grigg and bought another farm in the Tinwald dist. He sold that too and in 9g bought Grove Farm fo E. Gales. He was a member of the Ashburton County Racing Club. His sister Alice lived with him and died at his Tinwald farm 23 .12.81 aged 24. marr. '76 4 Frances he Millan of Co. Armagh family 5sons 3 daus.
