Marks/Inscriptions: H. a4 "Hammett James Belg rave ( 1864) was one of the party which left with Herbert Charlton How itty on 1 Jan. 1863 to cut a Mack to the West Coast by way of Lake Brunner. Besides these two there were Garland, H. Mullis, R. Little and Fired. Garland and Fred soon left the Canty and returned to Canty. Hammett was the onyx survivor of the others who w vere drowned in Lake Brunner while searing for food. Hammett had been left behind because he had art his foot with an axe . He managed to make his very oat to the mouth of the Ter makauri He had searched for his companuni s but their dugout canoe evident Gy sank when the wind got up.
