Marks/Inscriptions: H. 67 Hamilton, Alfred Ja par 1937) was a son of Rev. Hugh Staples Hamilton Vicar for 50 years of Maneton, Yorks. The Rev. Hugh had a large family and a small ueome and had to send his boys to school wherever they could get a scholarship. Alfred went to school at Leather head. He came out to N.Z. in '73 in the Ballochmyle e and worked in a tanner, Chen his brothers arrived next ken ie a year he joined them. They were entitled to a certain acreage for having paid their passages out and they took their sections in the Oxford Bush. Hans and Staples came out in 75 and the brothers formed the firm of Hamilton Bros. Sawmill.rs. They had 30 acres altogether and they walked to Oxford. Alfred and Tom took a job at Gam mons sawmill to get experience. They wae burnt out ore but were insured and got started again, this time at Coopers Creek. Tom stated ac a school teacher at west eyreton and Alfred Hans and Hugh all taught in Maori Schools. P. Keegan in The First Generation tells how Alfred Hamilton persuaded him to leave his wild ways and tale the chance of getting some education. Alfred taught for 5 years at Omakere school. Sn Jan. 86 he moved to Open Bay, Gisborne . There was muck lamentation among the Maoris of Oweka. marr. 19.1.81 at St. James's Cust Clara Matilda , 17 . dau.f Thmras Woodfield of Oxford.
