Marks/Inscriptions: M4 In '68 Kaiapoi was created a borough. The connal elected the first Mayor and Hall was in the chair. The candidates were Hall and Dr. Dudley and they tied and Hall being in the char gave his casting vole for himself and this became the first Mayor of Kaiapoi. The no doub t increase the feeling between him and Dudley. Hall presided over a meeting called to discuss the question of the bridge at Kaiapoi. . The budge had been partly washed away by the great flood of '68 and the swing put out of action, and 1 t had ban repaired as a temporary measure . The Engineer recommended a new bridge alon gide the old one at a cost of 1400. Repairing +raising the old one wined cost -£ 1250, June '68. Jos ale Burch proposed as an amend ment that the old bridge should be e and should be free of tols and this was carried 36 to 33 voles. repaired Hall was re-elected to the council in Sit. 68 being rite behind H. Middleton. He stood for the Rov. Coun. is May 70 and was easily beaten by Birch whos got 64 voles against Hales 72. There was no election to the Bo. Com. in 1 70 Hall and 2 others getting in unepposed. Dr. Dudley and and in J.C. Porter refused to stand. He moved to Ch.Ch.
