Marks/Inscriptions: H. 27. Hale, Barnabas James (184-86) was born in Portsmouth and was a son of Henry Hale, cabinet maker and of his wife , Charlotte Triggs . He was trained as a shoemaker . He arrived by the Canterbury , single, 10.1.64 . He started a boot and shoe shop in Cashel st and made his home in Linwood. He was a member of the Lin wood Town Board. ie was very interested in trotting and was on the comm. of the Heathcote Racing Club. He had an interest in some of J. Knon's horses. He was one of the holders of the lease of the Heathcote Toting Club and took an active part in the management. He was a great coursing enthusiast as well. He and W. G. Judge were partners in coursing .He was a promoter and director of the hump ton Trotting Clut His house and furniture and his celebrated trotting pony Jennie were sold 4.7.79 . There was another sale on Mar.' ; he was leaving for Eng. He was elected to the new for Linwood Dist. Town Connal Oct. 82; again in '84. He fill when getting of a tram and was run o r and killed by the following carriage 26.12.86 . It was not a mechanical age and there frequent ac denti caused by people jumping of a moving tram facing the wring way. He was then 42 years old. marr.
