Marks/Inscriptions: Sir GR Guinness 2 G.482 the High School. He was Pres. of the Greymouth Trotting Club. In '84 he defeated Joseph Petrie for the Grey seat and he continued to sit for Grey till his death He was chairman of committees 93-03 and Speaker from 1903 till his death. He was on the liberal side throughout and a strong supporter of old age pensions. He was a keen advocate of compulsory military training. He was a member of various Oddfellow Societies. marr. 21.12.78 at Greymouth Elizabeth 3' dau. of John Westbrook of Launceston He was knighted in 1911. He was never defeated in a Parlty. election. He d. 10.6.13 ag 67. "Phix", Parlty reporter of the Press says of Guinness - arrived in the House in '86 and brought thereto , a good figure, much black hair, whiskers and beard, a dusky complexion, a mitigated verbosity, and a chimney -pot hat. He is neither a very remarkable nor an excruciatingly mediocre politician.
