Marks/Inscriptions: G. 882 Guinness, Sir Arthur Robert (1846-1913) was born at Calcutta, the son of Francis Grimness q.v. and came to N.Z. in 2 with his parents in the Tory. He was educ. at X's Coll 54-60 and was No 31 on the school list. He was intended for the law and was articled to Edward Harston. He completed his articles with Garrick + Cow lis haw . He passed his final law examination in May '67 and was to be Admitted to practise by Judge G on at the next g in Chambers t siting i He was a keen cricket er and was sec. of the huron Cricket Club in 2 when he was only 16. He was elected to the comm. of the Mechanics Inst. in '66. He played in a ciller match United v. Ashburton played on the South Rakaia grod Oct 66 and made 31. . He started to practise in Grey mouth 1. with I 2. Warner.: 2. with E.G.B Ross; s. with H.W. Kitchingham . He became famous for his advocacy of the Fenian prisoners in 6 .He was a Steward of the Grey non th Races in 69. He practised on the West Coast For 46 years , being a notary public ho '8 In '73 he contested the Grey seat in Parlby's In 1 74 he was elected for the Par oa Riding in the W est laredo Prov Coun. In '76 he was elected to the furst Greymouth C.C. of which he was later chairman for 9 years and a member '76-90. Marks/Inscriptions: Sir GR Guinness 2 G.482 the High School. He was Pres. of the Greymouth Trotting Club. In '84 he defeated Joseph Petrie for the Grey seat and he continued to sit for Grey till his death He was chairman of committees 93-03 and Speaker from 1903 till his death. He was on the liberal side throughout and a strong supporter of old age pensions. He was a keen advocate of compulsory military training. He was a member of various Oddfellow Societies. marr. 21.12.78 at Greymouth Elizabeth 3' dau. of John Westbrook of Launceston He was knighted in 1911. He was never defeated in a Parlty. election. He d. 10.6.13 ag 67. "Phix", Parlty reporter of the Press says of Guinness - arrived in the House in '86 and brought thereto , a good figure, much black hair, whiskers and beard, a dusky complexion, a mitigated verbosity, and a chimney -pot hat. He is neither a very remarkable nor an excruciatingly mediocre politician.
