Marks/Inscriptions: G. 5 J.P. Gros man 7o The first sig n of his unfortunate weakness arose in Sept. 98 when he had ben Allowed to use some Mt Lyall Mine shares to raise money on. He had forged T.S. For ters ani in the course of there dealings . He was at the time a master at B.M.S and a lecturer at Canty Coll atl time. He had recently sold his con side able library. He had also forged Professor Has lais name 4 times on promissory notes and usad them to raise money on. £2000 was involved . He had speculated in Tasman ian Copper Mines and this had been successful . This led to fen ther speculati on s which turned out disastrous. He was found july an i Judge Deniston gave him 2 years. He went to Auck lard after he had served his sentence and wrote in the Star for 8u Gel Lys and dis tinge shed himself. When Auck. liv. formed ed a new chair in history and comics at £700 , he applied for it and got it - about 1905. Unfortunately the same series f events happened a gain. He again forged and again was sentenced. The Star employed him again when he came out and he was sent to Aust. as their correspondent Then he went to London where Sir Arthur Sims befriended him. In appearance he was fair, tall, Jewish . looking . His father d. 16.3.92 at Brisbane , His mother was a daughter of James Beni che P noun d of Lis keand, Cornwall and d. at Grenfell N.S.W. marr. 23.12.90 Edith Howitt 3 ' dau G.S. Searle . she was a 15.8.84 ag. 73 fellow graduate. She was a clever woman and wrote some novels under the name of Edith Searle He d. 3.2.53 in London ag. 89. His sister Janet G race, scarcely less brilliant, ran him neck and neck through his scholasti career. She was appointed first asst. at G.H.S. She was later principal of 2 large schools in Aust. west Maitland G.H.S. and Sydney. North shore G. H. S. At tamis he was sumner up to E.J.
