Marks/Inscriptions: G. 5848 Griffiths, Evan ( 1827- was born in Montg ornery shire .He marred Harriett Argyle who was three years older than him and they and their dau Eliz. Argyle, 1, arrived by the cameo in June 59. He became a coal merchant in Lylt. and was in part. with Benjamin Mather . They had the use of the yard belon ing to J.W. Juli, licensee of the Mitre. They were, in fact, Julias agents; he supplied the coal. In Dec. '68 Julian sued them for £ 212 short paid, and Mather and Griffiths won the case . They dis. part. and Griffiths went to Oxford. Shortly afterwards, June 69, he declared himself unable to meet his engagements. He had a brother named Richard Nicholas and he was charged with maling over 2 days and 2 horses to Nicholas in defraud f his creditors. He was found guilty and was given 12 months imprison ment by Judge Gresson. He was a member of the West Oxford Sch. Comm. May. 72. His farm was Fern Hill, WestOn fora widow Harriett d. at Kaiapoi 3.9.94 ag. 71 . dau Mary Argyle marr. 27.9.94 J.F. Wachs mann, gram +sed merchant, widow. pass list Ref.
