Marks/Inscriptions: .372 Gray, Melville (1867 -1946 approxI was born at Bowers well , Perth, Scot and was educ. at Harrowing He was a younger son and came ont to N.Z in the Colac o in 6 , landing at Port Chalmers. He went as a cadet to the Lower Pareora station which had just been bought by the N.Z. and Aust. Land Co . After 2 years there he was appointed manager of Otipua station by his cousin, George Gray Russell . After 2 years their he bought a thered share in Ashwick station, Burkes Pass. H. Brown, a visitor who rode wanted to ride Jond ives t in property in Canty , Fond round and selected Ashe wick which was then owned by Hawdon and Strachey. Brown and a brother foudy the other two - thirds. Brown wrote letters to his wife which were later published as a privately printed book. Acland says that Gray ran a pack of beales While he was at Col wiel . He sold out and went for a trip to Eng. and when he returned started a business as an estate agent + auditor in Timaru. He was one of the notable athletes of Canty and was a founder of the South Canty. Amate Athletic Club a widely famous and rather arches ive club. Mar. 84 and Pies. of the S. Canty A. A . Club Nov. 79. He was entertained at a diner at Burkes Pars before he left Ashwick , John McGregor, County Char man , presiding. He was a member of the Co. Coun. at the time. The men at Ashwick presented him with a piece of silver.
