Baker Polhill was employed with him in the Customs. In '51 Gouland was transferred to Akaroa as R.M. He and John Wal son heard the case of Col. Campbell, the Commissioner of Coun Lands v. George Matson. Matson was agent for Capt Muter and warned off Boys , Campbells surveyor The case was dismissed. Gouland was treas ure of the Church Fund in Akaroa and worked hard to get the first church built. and used for Divine Worship in Canty. The first server was held in Oct. 52 In Ap. 54 he was gazetted acting rov. See. And Auditor and a member of the Exec. Marks/Inscriptions: G.304 " Gould, Charles (1856 -90) was the second son of George Gould of Church ch and was born there 13.9.56. He was educ. at X's Coll. 67-74. He won a N.Z. university Scholarship in '74 . He was a good athlete and won the old Boys Champion Cup in '74. He won many races during his eight years at College ; In ree of teem was the 2 miles walk , open to the whole school , he was beake by Francis Barker who was 6 years older. There were 40 competitors and they were scattered all over the course. After he left school he went to Gould and Camerons Springfield station He left there in July '7 to go to the Noth ss. and the men on the station presented him with a saddle, bridle, stock whip and spurs. He bought a block in the Waikato next to Crid leigh who mentions him in his diary. His elder brother Joe was with him for a year. and his father also came up to have a look. He farmed at Morrinsville Palmerston, Waitoa and finally bought Whakatarehu run from Dr Campbell which was called Op orian He left his family at Tauranga and went to get thing ready for them .
