Marks/Inscriptions: G. 284 "Gore John was appointed by Capt. Cook as Lieut. of the Ed Endeav our whoever Zachariah Hicks died 25.5. 1771. When Cook first cruised off Banks Pen. he took it for an island 15.2.1770. He christened what is now Sumner Est nary , Gor0's Bay. It was still known as Gores Bay in 1857 when H. Thomson, master of the Mary Thomson reported on the Anchorage 2 Aug. '57. The name was transferred to Gore Bay when Robinson of Cheviot Hills started to use it as his station for landing goods and shipping wool. The actual point where he built his landing service was named Port Robinson and was about a mile south of Gore Bay - which has become a sea - side resort.
