Marks/Inscriptions: G. '53 Gilby, Charles Horace (1856- was born in Camps. Eng and was educ. there and went into business in Birmingham . In '76 he was a pupil of Henry Pit man of shorthand fare. He arrived in Wgtn. in 80 by the North im berland and took a position as asst. - master in Charles Cooks school in Ch.Ch. F rom there he joined the Lylt. Times staff. Later he went to the North Is and enlisted in the armed constabur lary in Tamaki an d Waikato. He kept a store in cam budge, Waikato and was a comm. trav for a time. In '86 he returned to Ch.Ch. and rejoined the Lylt. Times. In 91 he accepted the position of private sec. to the chairman of the Canty Coll Bd. of Gov. H. de C. Malet) In '93 when Malet went for a trip to Eng. he determined to devote his full time o Gilby 's Commercial Coll. which he had start in '87 while he was on the Commercial staff of the Lylt. Times. In '9 s the coming of the tr penite revolution ise d bus inness methods and greatly increased the scope of his school and kept him more busy than ever. His wife also taught in it and Miso Efe Rout, Miss M.L. F. Olliver A.W. shrimpton and L.L. Cordery. His son H. w.L. Digby was a holder of the Aust. record for short liane d speed son Arthur Horace marr. 30.11.08 Mario Frances only dau. T.G. Cyclop N.Z. 11: LT. 122 08.
