Marks/Inscriptions: G.143 Gifkins , William (1851-1926) was a son of Wm . Gifkins, merse y man and was born and Educ. in Herts. Eng. He came out in the Celestial Queen and landed at Dunedin in '68 . He learnt wool scouring from W. Rutherford of the Burnside Fell non gery, Green Island , Otago. He then moved to Canty . and set up small scouring plants at Various places such as Alford station , Double Hill , Mt Hutt, Acheron, Lake Heron , Lake Coleridge and Gen thoreau In 83 he bought 12 ac. near Styx and erected s installe buildings and machinery for scouring on a large scale . He designed an unproven scouring machine of his own . He was a well- known free mason and rose to be P.G. M. for Canty. He was chair man of the Papanui Sch. comm. marr. St. Pal ' Papanui 15.4.82 by Rev. F. G. Brittan Harriett, 2' dau of Francis Hudson of Daisy Banks Papanui, coach builder. He d. Ashburton 10.4 .26 ag 75 2' dau Fanny marr. 9.10.12 Thos Keeling 2' son bur. Mt. Somers. Wm. F. Hicken botha of Avonside.
