Marks/Inscriptions: G. 116 Gibb, John Menzies (1831-09) was bo rn at lumber auld, Stirlingshire Sect. and studied painting under John Mackenzie of Gre ck and exhibited for several years at the West of Scotland Institute and the Glasgow Inst. of Fine Arts. He arrived in N.Z. in '76 in the Merope and settled in Ch.Ch. He was very successful in prob. portraying N.Z. seascape and land scape He helped to promote the Canty Soc. of Arts f which he was a Vice. pres. Geo. G ou ld bought his "Golden Sunset in Lylt. Harb and presented it to the Canty Musee. He trained many students and Lady Onslow took lessons from him. A well known picture is his reproduction of the landing of the passengers from the Cressy. He might be called the first resident artist of any note in Ce. Ch. though Cousin s had been painting portraits for a few years The Lylt. Tines Wanly noticed his first chow of pictures an Firth3s rooms in Ch.Ch. He was se3ion clerk of St. Pals Church ap. 78 and was chosen elder in '78 son Wm.
