Marks/Inscriptions: G. 986 Gee Thomas (1809 - 76) came oat in the Sir Geo Pollock with his wife Eleanor and their family of 8 (see below) arriving 10.11.51. He was a pastry cook and baker by trade and he started business in Lylt. on Canterbury St. describing hume1 as a pastry cook, confectioners and biscuit maker ; he also was a ginger ben manufactur and catered for parties and dances . He was elected to the comm . of the Lylt. Colonists Soc. in . He imported a powerful soda water machine in He made the cake for the wedding of Robert Heaton Rhodes and Sophia Latter 100 egg were used and it stood 3 feet high. He used to bury all Dr Moores dairy produce from Charteris Bay . He was also an adept t at coloring clay pipes and De Moore used to pay him half a guinea each for them. His eldest son Thomas Major Gee came out in 59 in the Zealandia, and joined his father ; but in 63 they dss. part. Thomas and his sons going to Ch.Ch. while Thomas Major stayed in Lylt. Thomas Gee offered for sale in Dec. '61 the good will of his business and lter balance his lease ; but with no result. He was elected a churchwarden in 62 and was elected to the Comm. of the B. + F. Bible Soc. Nov. 62. when he moved to Ch.Ch. he started business in Colombo St. between Glos. + ArgO Streets on the West side . He got a license to sell alcohol e liquor fam. inf. pass list Canty. Marks/Inscriptions: G. 93 Thos. Gee in Oct. 63 an d what was called a refreshment license in '64 . a fre damaged his bur dings and stock in Ap. 67 and he was insured with the N.Z. Ins nance o. for £500. He estimated his loss at £ 500 and Thomas Russell of Auck, the founder of the Cay. who happened to be in Ch.Ch. at the moment (on Longbeach business tendered him a che que for L 400 in full satisfaction which Gee accepted. He wrote o letter to the Lylt . Times (9.4.67 ) about the affir . He retired frum the bus ines in Oct. 67 and his sons Walter and George q.v. took over from him. He was a Freeman of the City of London and had a family , 4 of whom died young. Much to the surprise of the family . old George aes father turned up in '84. '54. He dred at . 31.1.67 aged 89. He was supposed to have brought out water cress seed with him and scattered it liberally along the banks o f the Heathcote. By 1945 then had already been swenson generations Gees li ing in Canty.
