Marks/Inscriptions: G. 22 Gammack , James Alexander (1831-96) was born in Banffshire, Scot. and was I brought up to be a farmer. He came out in the Creyke in '50 and, failing to find farm work , worked on the Ferry Road. When the Fendall land in Fendalton was cut up he bought 2 ac. In '51 he went to the gold fields at Bendigo and spent 2 years there with pretty good results. In 54 he returned to Canty and bought land at Hals well and later added to it. He farmed it till '63 when he sold it to John Miln and David Lewis ; it later became Chas. Lewis 's farm. He then bought James Guilds farm at Springston and called it Gowan Led. This was R.S. 3052 + 3053 amounting to 300 aces . At the time of his death his farm property Ar outed to 1632 ac. and was one of the finest farms on the dist. He was a member + chairman of the Springs Rd. Bd and of the Sch. comm. Si Geo Grey asked him to stand or Part. but he always refused to enter politics. He was a great reader and a self Laught man and always made written su manes of the books her he read. At his death he had a fire Wary o 2000 volumes. ny of 3 In '74 he left for a trip home and was given a dinner by his friends. The Lylt. Times hoped that he would addie meetings and encourag e emigrants during his trip, as he was one of the most notable and successful of Canty. Marks/Inscriptions: G. 22. J Gammack farmers. He sailed in the Mongol s 8.4.74. Owing his trip he bough some high- priced Lincoln rams + Evesham at the English sales. He was back in Mar. 75. He was chairman Springston Sch . comm. Oct. 75 In June 76 he bought Aaron Fussell s farm at Tai Tape 53 ac pice £1080. He succeeded Rev. A.P.o Callaghan as chairman of the Springs Rd . Bd. June 76. He did net belong t 2 any church but he supported them all. When the census form came round he described him self as " Gamal ite and was fined gave 5 or it. Hos He then fill up the form as " No relig ron" Butt he l p the Wesleyan church 3 ac. for a church and a parsonage. At the tane of his death he left £ 100 each to the Wes. ch. . to the C. of E. to the Presby. Ch. and to Mt Mag dalai He was an enthusiast for improved farming methods. He gave an address to the Lincoln Farmers Club Mar. 72 on the value of tree planting both from the schefter and timber pout of view but also from the point of view of having rain. I In Aug. 63 his team of mares won the prize for the best pair of horses and the best Equipment at the Canty A. +P. assoc s first ploughing match. held at Joseph Hells farm at Avonside. Marks/Inscriptions: G. 22 J. Gammack. His team won the prize at the Lincoln ploughing match (July 68) at Prebbleton for the bes team in the ground. When he died his bee factions were left as follows : an endow ment estimated at £25000 to the Public Library : property to produce £200 a year to the North canty Bd. of educ. to found " 4 scholarships. His Springston farm of 1632 ac was adv. for lease by tender - divided into 8parmesan period 21 years. His estate was proved at under £30000. He d. at Springston 29.5.96 ag 66 marr. 18.3.91 Anne Reed Aiken widow Robert Aiken of Broadfield . She d. 1.12.08 ag. 7 Mrs Ganache d. at Spin,land, Papanui 26.8.67 ag. 75 (mother?)
