Marks/Inscriptions: F. 333. Fraser, Hugh, owned Lake Ohau : had a great knowledge of Canty high country. His son John sad that Hugh Fraser and Alex McMurdo in '57 travelled from Nilson down the Awatere , over Barrell Pass to Hanmer , hen on to Ch.Ch. and to Timaru in search of country. They went on south and came to the Ohan River which they crossed and came in sight of Ben More Range . They both thought that that would sunt them nicely . After a lot of argument they decided to race to a mato+ owne bush about half a mile away - the winner to take Ben More. M.Murdo won and jot Ben More and Fraser got the losers share - Lake han. He is said to have named it B 1N Hevesi which became corrupted to Ben Chan. (vance) He found it hard to get shep in Canty. and had to go to Nelson and drive them all the way down. He had trouble in jetting past Geo. Rhodes at the Levels. His rover Big Mick - otherwise Nicolo Radove said nothing but no compendium when Geo. Rhodes stopped him. Fraser sold Ben Ohan with 60000 ac with ini prov mens to Ostler and Davison for £ 7500 - sheep to be delivered f shiers. When Fraser brought his sheep down from Nelson Le was prosecuted by C.o. Torlesse for driving his sheep across Torlesse bun dary Without giving written notice (he had given Mrs T verbal notice). He had 1000 sheep with a p his £5.C086 clean certificate + was fined 63 per head : heard before W.G. Brittan. J.Hall : C. Bowen R.H holes : W.B. Bray. LT. 28.3.57 .
