Marks/Inscriptions: F 314 Francis, Frederick Wyatt (1856-1901) was the youngest son of John Perry Gurney Francis and his wife Sarah Cowe and was born in Ess ex. He arrived in ' with his parents in the barque Cornubia and was educ. at Gees school in Ch.Ch. He went into the P.O. service and stayed there 4 years and then joined Crowe + o wme merchants as c 2 partner. He was bankrupt in '84. In '87 he joined Manning + 7o as traveller and remained with the form many years He joined the volunteers in '74 when he went into the City Guards as a private . In '78 he rose to sub Lieut and in '81 Lieut and adjutant with the rah of Capt. on the formation of the first Canty. Bat n under Col. Tosswill in '85. He was promoted to Major in '87 . Tie batt : was disbanded in '89 and he was transferred to the unattached list (active division). When the North Canty Infantry Batti was formed, he was quen the command with the rank of Lieut. Col. . He was a first class rifle shot and won the Challenge Belt 7 times when in the Arty Guards. He received the hong Service medal July 97 He went to the Boer war in comman d of the 5' Contingent. When in Africa, he was put in command of the 4' Reg. , 2 Bde , Rhodesian Field Force. His force distinguis hed itself at Malmanche Hell 16.8.190 0. Marks/Inscriptions: F. 314 F.W. Francis 2 soon after he had to go to Hop. with enteric and was invalid ed bach to N.Z. To convalescent e he, with 640 others , went on atrik to Eng in the Britannica He arrived back in N.Z. Jan 61 , having had recurrence of fever. He went to Wanganui to attend a meeting of the N.Z. Rifle Assoc. and to act as a judge in a rifle shooting match and suffered another attack of fever fr on which he did not recover . He d. at his home Roslyn, Wilsons Rd.
