Marks/Inscriptions: B. 468. Bishop, Helyar Wedder own (1851- 1918) was bon at Tich bons, Hints, son of Rev. A.C. Bishop, was educ. at Winchester and arrived at Lyl ; in '68 by the Ship Mermaid . He joined his brother Henry who with Capt. Weekes was farming at the Ram Paddock on hs Waipara. He went on to Motueka where he went in for hop growing . He became an expert Marri scholar and was translator and interpreter to sir Donald Mo Lean . He acquired a great Knowledge of the language, Customs and land titles of the Maoris . In '72 he crosscut d to Wgtn and taught in a school. In July 73 he entered the Gout. service and was attached to the native dept. He was sent to Hokian pa in '76 as clerk and interpreter to the R.Ms, Court and was later Sec. and interpreter to Judge Marring of "Old New Zealand " fame, In '82 Bishop was appointed R.M. for the Bay of Islands , a district which later included all North Auckland. He was moved to Che in '93 as S.M. for North Canty. In 1905 he became s.M. for ChCh.
