Marks/Inscriptions: B. 464 Bishop , Edward Benchley (18 11 ) nas born at somer field House Mede maid stone , Kent. the eldest son of Ages Beho dis tiller and his second wife Mary Anne Benchley. Hs was educ. in Eng. and France and served for 21 years with MesSwaine Ro, distillery of Lindon . He came out with his br others and sisters in the Charlotte Jane in '50 . He had bought land orders from the Canty Assoc ; he and his froter F.A. owned R.S. 98 , 100 acres on the Heathcote at the foot of the hills. known as Somer field and later farmed by H. W. Packer. The Bishops packed their belongings on a horse and camped r the first ought near Wilsons Bridge . They got some timber up the Heathcote to their section to to built a shelter with. E.B. Bishop advertised in the early umber of the t Tines as a land agent giving as his address, Somer field Farm near hutCh. In June 53 H. Bishop of Somor field Farm were advertis ing potatoes for sale at the pit at l 4 per ton. In ap. 59 Bishop had his first note in the paper of woe and spits for sale - SWain + Booed celebrated Old Tom gin in cases and whisky and wie shortly to follow. He was elected to the ChCh. C.C. in Jan. 65 he was also appointed t neas. of the ChCh Mechanics Inst in that year. He remained see of the Canty A. + P. till '71 . His outstanding services were unpaid . At. ery annual dinner his splendid worsh was referred to. once he presented a petition sig ned by 31 merchants and traders asking that the day of the Show be changed rom, row date ' Nov. The Comm decided to make the day Friday the 8' Nov and has remained the second Friday in Nov sex cept in '68 when it was held on Thes No. 10' He always made a speech at the Anne nal durer and he always referred to him self as a farmer . No doubt he meant to beak away fon business and become a farmer and nothing else . He bought out with him a frame house which he put up on RS g8 He also brought an English cart, a plough , arrows and c piano. He built a farm stockyards and a barn. John Anderson made him a molding plough. He succeeded Wm Thom son as Sc. T Treas. of the farmers Club. He suggested the annual stallin parade. Marks/Inscriptions: B. 464. E.B. Bishop. 4. after his ferst failure to get elected to the ChCh Municipal Coun. he was elected regularly y until be became chairman in 66. He was Mayor of Ch.Ch in 72 and '73 . He resigned from the Council in '75. He presented a prize to the Vol. Coy. which did best in rifle practice ; the Engineer Coy. won it. He was treas. and in Pres. of the Rifle Assoc. He was chairman of the Central Bd. of Health and in '795 bought forward a sanitation scheme. He was presented with a valuable pice of plate when he retired fr on the office of Mayor. He published in '70 an abstract of the Munic pal Corporations Act. He called a meeting of the shareholders of the Mechani Inst. and told the meeting that the Prov. Govt. was willing o put up £ 1000 and buy out the shareholders and open the library to the public. The offer was Welcomed . The M.S. had never been what its name implied and very few working men had had anything to do with il . This was the beginning of the Canty . Public Library. He made his home in Canner Sq.; hs unmarried sister Emma Kate lived there with him till her death in 98. He withdrew from the firm of Bishop 1o far. 79. Cramer Sy He d. 25.4.8 7 at Oed aged 75.
