Marks/Inscriptions: B. 47 Birdling, William (1822-1902) was born gt 7 ome Somerset shir , and arrived in Wgtn by the London in '42. W.B. Rhodes engaged him to look after his cattle on the ensue ar and he succeeded Wm. Green at araroa. From there he went to Long Bay . When the Rhodes Bes. bought Pirau from the Green woods , Gergen Rhodes and Birdling went over there. Bundling was paid £20 a year. In '52 when he had saved enough he bought the first part - 700ac. of what became u on as Bud ling) Flat. Here he built his first Wattle and dab hut. He and George Price were neighbours and Seem to have g of on wee together. Birdlings furst section was called Wai Koko and Cater he had 50c0 ac. of freehold and 15000 of leasehold which carried 10000 sheep . Waikoteo was of 2550 ac in '90 . when it was put up r 190 re secured it again with or bed £80 rental. He bought 400 ac. from the Crown in Aug. 85. In 77 he han ded the management of his station to his sons and for 14 years lived and farmed at W ivanchelles Bey. and for five years after the at aOt Shirley.
