Marks/Inscriptions: B. 445. Bird , Richard (1834 -1922) was born in Exeter and served his apprentices hip as carpenter and j6iner . As a journey man he was paid 18t- paer 60 home week. He went to London and a 56'/2 hour week at 8 "per hour. He came to N.Z. in the souk r in '74 and worked at Wgtn at a rate of 1t- a day. He came to ChCh in '75 and was engaged by Baker Bros (John. + James) for an Ashburton job the Anglican parsonage. 1e helped to build the first Anglican church and also the Methodist church . He was the acute t for the Methodist parsonage, He b ad attended the London School of Art. He became an architect and builder in his own account. In '87 he went f r a trip to England and visited his bute place, He continued in business in Ashburton till 1910. He be cams a member of the Ashburton Boy. Coun. Chairman of the works Comm. and finally Mayor 91-92. He d Ashburton 17.6.22 aged 88. He planted a Mayoral memorial oak 4.8.92 fond of fishing + hooting; member Ash . Acclmm. Soc. Peas. Ash.
