Marks/Inscriptions: B. 412 Bevan.B rowney Charles Edm und (1854- -1926) was born at Camel ford, Cornwall, the son of the Rev. William Roberts Brown , a mister of the hild Methodist Fe Church for 50 years who died in Ch Ch 22.5.85 aged 71. He was educ. at Tennyson 's old School , Lowther Grammar School in hines. From there he moved with his parents to Bristol and went to Bustos GAmmarus School . In '74 he wen a scholarship which took him to Lincoln Coll. Oxford . In 78 he got his B.H. with a 2' class in Lit. Human wres . In 79 he became asst. master at Manchester Grammar School and from there he sent in his application for the N.Z. position for which he was selected fr our a field of 66. The Board was the same which selected his predecess ox Miller and was a distinguished oun Rev.B. Jowett, Master of Balliol Rev. James Wilson of Clitoris n, Sedgwick and Kennaway, N.Z. gent. general . When he came out he found the difference of opinion between miller (his predeces and the Board was still som older ing . some boys had left and gone to X's Coll. The bad times of the 80 's had begun . His success in building up a school which was under a cloud was remark able- - all the mere so because he did not impress as a strong personality. Si Janes Hight said he was a very undecided man. - was 1 unable to make up his mond However he managed it there was no don bt about his success . When the writer was at X ' Coll in the early 1900'5 the B.H.S. was undoubtedly a better school . They beat cole both in school work and in James. In about 1903 there was a vey Leary snow fall: abort 6 inches was lying all over Ch Ch. A sow balley Alst was anauyed between the two schools on the Collge foot ball ground. B.H.S. arrived i il force and just pushed College of the ground. He was president of the secondary schools conference . He retired in 1920. At thse time he was more or less of an invalid and he lived a retired life for his last 6 years . One of his marn act viles was the young At zeiss League. His school nee name was Balbus - curious bycanda the famous Bus Worthy of " 's Coll also derived his und name from Bulbous. He died while o a visit fo his son R.E. Bevan. They lived for a long time in the Springfield Rd. 3 sons. all doctors. . usually known as Fit was a d. stings ed doctor , a strong supporter of the C. of E . and the Cathedral. a lover of native bush and plants and birds (he bought an ace of Kowai Bush) a mountain climber, a lover of the beautiful d.5.10.34 unmarried.
