Marks/Inscriptions: B. 404. Beswick, Dr. Samuel M.R.C.S. (1823.-69) was a son of Samuel Bewil f Scarborough, Yorks and of his wife Annie and came out to N.Z. T in the Hampshire with his brother John arriving Co.5.53. He was gazetted a duly Jan. 84 In c e was O queried medical practitioner Ap. 54 he n vas gazetted Deputy Registrar of B. O. + M. for the Kaiapoi dist. Au entry in the journal of C.O. Torlesse mentions that he had paid 8 Dr Beswick £10 beny part of a subscripti r to in duce, to settle at Kaiapoi. Later Beswick refused to attend Alicia in child burth because De. Barker, had been called in. (Torlesse had cause for worry . His wife pr o duc ed thee still born children before one was born also) . Beswick apparently stayed in Kaiapoi for some years . He gave medical ev dence at the inquest on en hag the Kap a swagger, Mar. 60. He was surgeon to No.5 Coy. Canty. Rifle volunteers (the Kaiapoi Co.) He was as good a rifle shot as his brother Joseph . He came high up in all the rifle matches which were the high lights of the volunteer training. Out of for rifles offered over the whole of NZ for D. rifle shooting , he won one and W . H. Revel also of Kaiapoi won one. Coast paper spoke of "his professional abilities and urban itty of disposition " In spite of this t does not appear that he had high standing as a doctor. d. at Hokitika 31.10.69. aged 46. dau. Sarah Anne Cockerill marr. as his 2': wile Instin John Aylmer in '69.
