Travers was his opponent - a man of greatly superior education and talents; but the local man just won. The voting was O won Beswick 11 voles and Travers 93. Beswick would not have but for the energy of John Ollivier who O2parse a coach load of 17 ChCh men who had vote at Kaiapoi and all of whom were voters for Beswick. Pick man did not stand this time. Bowen having left for Eng. the office of Speaker of the Council had to be filled and Beswick was tacked of. But whatever his ambitions he had the good sense to realise that H.J. Tancred , the other candidate , had claims infinitely superior to his own; o he settled the questing by second ing Tancred for Speaker. The Lylt. Times writing on this question said " It is said that Mu Beswick intends to con lest the honour w ith Mr Tancred.
